Baseball Recap: Greenville Takes a Loss

Greenville extended their losing streak to three on Monday, dropping their season record down to 2-13 in the process. They came up short against the Penobscot Valley Howlers, falling 19-2. The Lakers were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Howlers apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in May of 2024.

Greenville saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Liam Mason, who went 1-for-2 with one stolen base and one run.

As for Penobscot Valley, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 5-8 record this season. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

On Penobscot Valley's side, Matt Hatch made a splash no matter where he played. He struck out seven batters over three innings while giving up no earned runs or hits (and not a single walk). Hatch has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with three runs.

In other batting news, Dane Duvall was a standout: he went 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. Noah Austin was another key player, getting on base in all three of his plate appearances with three runs.

Looking ahead, Greenville will host Bangor Christian at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Patriots will roll in looking for their seventh straight victory, something the Lakers surely won't give up without a fight. As for Penobscot Valley, they will venture away from home to face off against Woodland at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
