Basketball Recap: Millard South Takes a Loss

Millard South managed to keep up with Millard West until halftime on Friday, but things quickly went downhill from there. The Millard South Patriots lost 44-24 to the Millard West Wildcats. While losing is never fun, the Patriots can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Nebraska basketball rankings (they are ranked 31st, while the Wildcats are ranked third).

When it comes to explaining why Millard South lost, don't look at Jayla Cleveland. Despite the final result, she posted four points and five boards. Abbi Durow also deserves some recognition as she posted her first block of the season.

Millard West's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Norah Gessert led the charge by putting up 12 points along with six rebounds and four steals. That's the most steals Gessert has posted since back in December of 2024. Neleigh Gessert was another key player, scoring 13 points in addition to five boards and four blocks.

Millard South's loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 9-6. As for Millard West, the win (which was their 14th in a row) raised their record to 16-1.

Millard South won't have much time to rest: their next contest is against Omaha Westside at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Omaha Westside is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 57.8 points per game this season. As for Millard West, they will head out to take on Elkhorn South at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Millard West is facing Elkhorn South at the right time seeing as Elkhorn South is stuck on a three-game losing streak.
