Baseball Recap: Whitney Takes a Loss

Whitney had lost three straight at home, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 4-10 to make it four. They lost 18-1 to the Cerritos Dons. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Dons this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 9-1 on Tuesday.

Whitney saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Aaron Victoria, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run.

As for Cerritos, they are on a roll lately: they've won ten of their last 12 matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 13-11 record this season. Their hitters stepped up their game for this one, as that was the most runs they've scored all season.

On Cerritos' side, Frank Melendrez looked comfortable as he didn't allow a single earned run while striking out eight over four innings pitched. Melendrez has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Braxton Reed was a standout: he went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, two doubles, and two RBI. He has become a key player for Cerritos: the team is 4-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 9-10 otherwise. Another player making a difference was Julian Diaz, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, and one double.

Whitney has already played their next contest, an 8-6 defeat against Santa Ana Valley on the 23rd. As for Cerritos, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 2-1 win against Ocean View on the 18th.
