Preview: Wellington Dukes vs. Black River Pirates
Wellington has enjoyed a three-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They will square off against the Black River Pirates at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Hopefully Wellington focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 15 on Monday.
Last Monday, Wellington was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 45-41 to Monroeville. The loss was a bit of a surprise, as Wellington came into the contest with a sizable advantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 175th, while Monroeville is ranked 626th).
Despite their loss, Wellington saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Taylor Morris, who scored 20 points along with four steals, was perhaps the best of all. Those 20 points set a new season-high mark for her. Another player making a difference was Brooke Lehmkuhl, who dropped a double-double on 12 points and ten rebounds.
Meanwhile, Black River had just enough and edged Clearview out 52-49 on Wednesday. The win made it back-to-back wins for Black River.
Wellington's defeat ended a four-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 5-2. As for Black River, they now have a winning record of 3-2.
Everything went Wellington's way against Black River when the teams last played back in February as Wellington made off with a 54-30 win. Will Wellington repeat their success, or does Black River have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
