Softball Recap: Westby Comes Up Short

After flying high against Black River Falls on Thursday, Westby came back down to earth. The Norse fell just short of the Sparta Spartans by a score of 5-4 on Friday. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Norse of the 7-6 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in April of 2024.

Ava Berg spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered five earned runs on seven hits and racked up six Ks.

At the plate, Ava Kreuzer and Haidyn Thurin stepped up to the plate in a big way. Kreuzer went 2-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI, while Thurin went 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. The team also got some help courtesy of Aspyn Fleming, who got on base in three of her four plate appearances with one run.

Westby's defeat dropped their record down to 5-9. As for Sparta, the win (which was their third in a row) raised their record to 5-5.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Westby will face off against Seneca at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. As for Sparta, they will square off against Aquinas at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
