Volleyball Recap: Haverhill Comes Up Short

If Haverhill was feeling good fresh off their 3-0 takedown of Whittier RVT on Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Hillies took a 3-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Lowell Red Raiders on Wednesday. The Hillies have struggled against the Red Raiders recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive lost meeting.

Haverhill couldn't get the win, but they sure gave Lowell a tough time in the second set. The match finished with set scores of 25-17, 31-34, 25-8, 25-19.

Despite the defeat, Haverhill saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Peter Grillo had 30 assists and five digs. Grillo has been hot, having posted 13 or more assists the last seven times he's played. Patrick Osgood was another key player, getting seven digs and two aces.

Haverhill's loss dropped their record down to 3-9. As for Lowell, the win (which was their 11th in a row) raised their record to 12-1.

We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Haverhill is set to challenge their familiar foe Chelmsford at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Lowell will square off against rival Andover at 5:00 p.m. on Friday.
