Softball Recap: Calumet New Tech Comes Up Short

Calumet New Tech extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to 22 on Monday, dropping their season record down to 0-8 in the process. They lost 15-0 to the Wheeler Bearcats. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Warriors of the 15-0 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in May of 2024.

As for Wheeler, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last 11 matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-5 record this season. The result was nothing new for Wheeler, who have now won eight contests by ten runs or more so far this season.

For Wheeler's part, Nora Howell and Cadence Piunti made a big impact while hitting and pitching. Throwing, Howell kept things locked down with no earned runs or hits while striking out ten over four innings pitched. Meanwhile, Piunti pitched one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than one walk in eight consecutive appearances. At bat, Howell got on base in two of her three plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI, while Piunti got on base in all four of her plate appearances with four stolen bases and three runs. Those four stolen bases gave Piunti a new career-high.

In other batting news, Abby Allen was incredible, getting on base in all four of her plate appearances with seven stolen bases, two runs, and one double. Those seven stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Olivia Hessling, who got on base in all three of her plate appearances with two stolen bases, one run, and one double.

While Calumet New Tech had to take the loss, they won't have to wait long to give it another shot: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
