Basketball Recap: Portsmouth Comes Up Short

Portsmouth and Ponaganset squared off in some playoff action on Friday, but Portsmouth had to settle for second. They took a 45-40 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Ponaganset Chieftains. The loss continues a trend for the Patriots in their matchups with the Chieftains: they've now lost four in a row.

Despite the defeat, Portsmouth saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Gyselle Mairs went 9-for-14 to rack up 23 points. Mairs also set a new season-high mark in shooting accuracy with 64%. Annie Hurd was another key player, putting up six points in addition to eight rebounds and five blocks.

Portsmouth's loss dropped their record down to 13-6. As for Ponaganset, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 20-3.

Portsmouth does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Ponaganset, they will face off against Barrington at 8:00 p.m. on February 28th. Barrington will roll in looking for their 15th straight win, something Ponaganset surely won't give up without a fight.
