Basketball Recap: Royer Alvarez's Big Game Can't Quite Lead Fort Morgan over Sterling

Fort Morgan lost against Sterling back in January, and unfortunately they wound up with the same result on Monday. The Fort Morgan Mustangs took a 60-46 bruising from the Sterling Tigers. While losing is never fun, the Mustangs can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 230th, while the Tigers are ranked 68th).

Fort Morgan lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Royer Alvarez, who posted 13 points and six rebounds. Those 13 points gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was JJ Marquez, who had seven points along with five assists and five boards.

Sterling had a senior duo take command as Colin Linn to rack up 16 points in addition to six steals and five rebounds and Ethan Thyne on his way to 19 points. With that strong performance, Linn is now averaging an impressive 2 steals per game. Dayten DiOrio was another key player, en route to 12 points.

This is the second loss in a row for Fort Morgan and nudges their season record down to 6-15. As for Sterling, they have been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 12 contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 14-7 record this season.

Fort Morgan didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 63-56 win against Frontier Academy on the 25th. As for Sterling, they will venture away from home to square off against Highland at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Sterling is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 51.6 points per game this season.
