Softball Recap: White Oak Takes a Loss

After flying high against East Carteret last Tuesday, White Oak came back down to earth. The White Oak Vikings took a 9-4 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Pamlico County Hurricanes on Friday. The loss continues a trend for the Vikings in their meetings with the Hurricanes: they've now lost three in a row.

Alyssa Carkhuff put in work no matter where she played. On the mound, she struck out six batters over six innings while giving up four earned (and five unearned) runs off ten hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one walk any time she's pitched this season. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 3-for-4.

In other batting news, Avery Sise made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs and stole a base while going 3-for-4.

Even though they lost, White Oak hit smart and finished the game with only two strikeouts. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now struck out at most three strikeouts in three consecutive matchups.

White Oak's defeat dropped their record down to 4-3. As for Pamlico County, they are on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 4-3 record this season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. White Oak will challenge Northside - Jacksonville at 6:00 p.m. on Monday. Northside - Jacksonville has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 24.8 runs per game on average), something White Oak will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Pamlico County, they will square off against Lejeune at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The game will give Pamlico County their first taste of in-conferenceaction this season.
