Baseball Recap: Mountain Heritage Takes Down Swain County in a Playoff Battle

Mountain Heritage extended their postseason success on Friday against Swain County. Their pitchers stepped up to hand the Maroon Devils a 15-0 shutout. The Cougars might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won eight matchups by six runs or more this season.

Lane Chandler was a major factor while hitting and pitching. He tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Cason Jones, who went 1-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. He is becoming a predictor of Mountain Heritage's success: when he posts at least three RBI the team is 4-1 (and 7-10 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Branson Fox, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two runs, two doubles, and one stolen base.

Mountain Heritage was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .440. They are a perfect 9-0 when they post a batting average of .375 or better.

The victory made it two in a row for Mountain Heritage and bumps their season record up to 11-11. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered a grand total of 2 run in those games. As for Swain County, they have been struggling recently as they've lost three of their last four games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 12-9 record this season.
