Basketball Recap: Nixon Mustangs vs. Mission Veterans Memorial Patriots

The Nixon Mustangs waltzed into their matchup on Friday with ten straight wins but they left with 11. They blew past Mission Veterans Memorial, posting a 90-43 win on the road. Given Nixon's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 277th, while the Patriots are ranked 1194th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Nixon's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Mason Vela led the charge by almost dropping a double-double on 20 points and nine steals. Another player making a difference was Jose Escobar, who scored 20 points along with two steals.

Nixon is on a roll lately: they've won 12 of their last 15 games, which provided a nice bump to their 22-9 record this season. As for Mission Veterans Memorial, they dropped their record down to 5-19 with that loss, which was their fifth straight at home.
