Sac-Joaquin section news and notes:

* Elk Grove beat Lincoln of Stockton 35-21 in a battle of top-ranked section foes, with the Herd scoring two touchdowns while pitching a second-half shutout. Wadus Parker rushed for 127 yards and three touchdowns and Robert Frazier had 102 and one score for Elk Grove, which held USC-commit tailback Justin Davis to no yards on four carries in the second half, and 111 total.

* Folsom sophomore quarterback Jake Browning had a spectacular varsity debut, tossing a national-record tying 10 touchdowns—five to Phillip Carter in the first half—to beat Woodcreek 68-28. Browning passed for 689 yards, second most in state history, according to the Cal-Hi Sports Record Book. Curiously, Cal-Hi disputes whether or not the 10 touchdown tosses tie a national record, though the National Federation of State High School Associations online record book shows that they do. Cal-Hi reported over the weekend that the actual national record for touchdown throws in a single game is 16, by Arthur Smith in Nebraska, from a 201-7 game in 1921. A spokesman from the National Federation of State High School Associations said the firm is trying to verify the 91-year-old Nebraska mark.

* Aaron Zwahlen of Downey (Modesto) tossed a school-record seven touchdown passes to beat Golden Valley (Merced) 49-7. Fresh off a 29-touchdown season, Zwahlen passed for 315 yards and hit Richard Lopez for four scoring strikes.

* Buhach Colony beat Bay Area power San Ramon Valley, state-ranked No. 22 in one poll, 28-24 on the road. The Thunder, coming off a 12-1 season, rushed for 336 yards on 52 carries and held on after taking a 21-0 lead.

* The section's longest losing streak came to an end when West Campus (Sacramento) beat Cristo Rey (Sacramento) 21-14, halting a 28-game skid. Nate Harris, who has coached football in Sacramento at various schools for nearly 40 years, is the Warriors' first-year coach.

* Dewey Guerra, the founding father of the Cordova football dynasty of the 1970s, died last week at 85. He started the Lancers program as a new school in 1963, introduced the region to the wishbone and coached perhaps the greatest team in section history in 1975, a Lancers group that finished 11-0 and nationally ranked No. 1.
