Basketball Game Preview: St. Stephen's & St. Agnes Saints vs. Alexandria City Titans

The St. Stephen's & St. Agnes Saints and the Alexandria City Titans will face off at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday without much rest having both just played. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (St. Stephen's & St. Agnes has five straight wins, Alexandria City has three straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the court.

St. Stephen's & St. Agnes is headed into the matchup after thoroughly thrashing Benedictine: they outscored them in every quarter. Given that consistent dominance, it should come as no surprise that St. Stephen's & St. Agnes blew Benedictine out of the water with an 80-50 final score. Given the Saints' advantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked sixth, while the Cadets are ranked 42nd), the result on Friday wasn't entirely unexpected.

St. Stephen's & St. Agnes' victory was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Colin Pollock, who went 8 for 12 on his way to 18 points in addition to seven boards and five steals. With that strong performance, Pollock is now averaging an impressive 2.3 steals per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Julian Burgdolf, who went 5 of 10 on his way to 16 points.

Meanwhile, Alexandria City was beaten by Friendship Tech Prep Academy 109-40 on Friday.

St. Stephen's & St. Agnes pushed their record up to 5-1 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home dating back to last season. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 72.3 points per game. As for Alexandria City, their defeat dropped their record down to 1-4.

Everything went St. Stephen's & St. Agnes' way against Alexandria City when the teams last played back in December of 2018, as St. Stephen's & St. Agnes made off with an 81-61 victory. The rematch might be a little tougher for St. Stephen's & St. Agnes since the squad won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
