Volleyball Preview: Service Cougars vs. Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears
Service has enjoyed the comforts of home their last three games, but now they'll head out on the road. They will take on the Juneau-Douglas Crimson Bears at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday.
Service is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of Alaska's top teams: Chugiak, who was ranked eighth in their home state at the time (Service was ranked seventh). Service fell just short of Chugiak by a score of 3-2 on Saturday.
Service wouldn't go down easily and took Chugiak into a fifth set but they suffered a heartbreaking five-point loss. The final score came out to 25-23, 20-25, 23-25, 25-22, 15-10.
The losing side was boosted by Myalani Watson, who had 12 digs and three aces. She is on a roll when it comes to digs, as she's now had ten or more in the last four games she's played.
Even though they lost, Service was lethal from the service line and finished the game with 12 aces. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now served at least six aces in five consecutive games.
Meanwhile, Juneau-Douglas was able to grind out a solid win over Ketchikan on Saturday, taking the game 3-1. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Crimson Bears.
The match finished with set scores of 25-22, 25-14, 15-25, 25-9.
Juneau-Douglas found their leader in sophomore Leila Cooper, who had three digs and two aces.
Juneau-Douglas' victory bumped their record up to 15-27-5. As for Service, their defeat ended a five-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 32-20-2.
