League recap: East Surry climbs in state rankings

1A Conference 5 recap September 10, 2013

East Surry scaled the state rankings by moving to 98 from 134 this week, the biggest jump in 1A Conference 5. The Cardinals were able to make move up by topping North Surry 35-6.

Bishop McGuinness and Alleghany played the most contested game in the league this week, with Bishop McGuinness eventually emerging with a 31-28 victory.

John Dickenson and Lucas Koons gave East Surry a balanced attack in passing and rushing last week. Dickenson threw for 94 yards and 2 touchdowns, while Koons ran for 105 yards. Dickenson also contributed to the rushing game with 36 yards on the ground.

Dickenson and Koons gave David Diamont's team a balanced attack through the air and ground last week.

Dickenson put up the best numbers in passing as the Cardinals bested the Greyhounds. Dickenson's favorite target this week was Dylan Slate, who caught 2 passes for 68 yards.

HORTON CALEB was the best receiver in the league this week as Mount Airy topped Carroll County. CALEB racked up 5 receptions for 86 yards. JULIAN RAWLEY helped Mount Airy's passing attack out by catching 4 balls for 43 yards.

Koons was the best running back in 1A Conference 5 this week.

Leading the league in both passing and receiving yards, the Bears' LOGAN HOLDER and CALEB have proven to be a lethal combination. 6-0 quarterback HOLDER has thrown for 306 yards this season, while CALEB has 12 catches for 158 yards. East Surry's Koons leads the league in rushing yards with 386.

Walkertown took down South Davidson 55-0 last week, the largest margin of any game.
