Volleyball Recap: Vermilion Sailors vs. Open Door Christian Patriots
After flying high against Bowsher on Saturday, Vermilion came back down to earth. The Sailors fell 3-1 to the Open Door Christian Patriots on Tuesday. While the Sailors didn't get the win, they did start the game off strong, beating the Patriots 25-21 in the first set.
Vermilion started the match hot and won the first set, but they struggled down the stretch and lost the last three. The final score came out to 21-25, 25-19, 25-14, 25-21.
Emma Gebhardt paced Vermilion's offense, picking up nine kills. Gebhardt got some help from Lauren Logsdon and her 12 assists. Delaney Russell controlled things from the service line, finishing with two aces.
Open Door Christian was led to victory by Maggie Gillum and Taylor Giesbrecht. Gillum had ten digs and three aces, while Giesbrecht had 17 digs, 11 kills, three aces, and one block. Giesbrecht has been hot recently, having posted 11 or more kills the last four times she's played.
Vermilion dropped their record down to 2-5 with the defeat, which was their sixth straight on the road dating back to last season. As for Open Door Christian, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-2.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Vermilion will take on Edison at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday. As for Open Door Christian, they will challenge Northside Christian at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday.
