Baseball Recap: Deweyville Triumphs

Deweyville hadn't done well against Big Sandy recently (they were 0-9 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. The Pirates came out on top in a nail-biter against the Wildcats, sneaking past 10-8. For the Pirates, this counts as revenge for the 9-3 victory the Wildcats walked away with the last time they faced one another back in April of 2024.

Gunner Evans and Lane Gray were major factors no matter where they played. On the mound, Evans struck out eight batters over five innings while giving up just one earned (and five unearned) runs off six hits. Meanwhile, Gray tossed two innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off one hit. Deweyville is 2-1 when Evans allows one or fewer earned runs, but 4-12 otherwise. At bat, Evans got on base in four of his five plate appearances with three runs, one stolen base, and two RBI, while Gray went 2-for-4 with two runs and one triple. Evans has been hot recently, having posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Slade Gunter, who went 2-for-4 with three RBI, two runs, and one stolen base. Micah Curl also deserves some recognition as he got his first hits of the season.

Deweyville pushed their record up to 6-13 with the win, which was their third straight at home. The home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games. As for Big Sandy, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 11-9-1.

Deweyville will have a chance to go back-to-back against the Wildcats: the pair's next game is a rematch scheduled at 6:00 p.m. on Friday.
