Softball Recap: Maine East Takes a Loss

Maine East extended their losing streak to seven on Thursday, dropping their season record down to 2-8 in the process. They came up short against the Niles West Wolves, falling 19-2. If the Blue Demons were looking for revenge after losing 24-0 to the Wolves when the teams met back in April of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Maine East saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Katerina Giannopoulos, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one run and one double. That double marked the first that Giannopoulos has hit this season.

As for Niles West, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-7. With that victory, they brought their scoring average up to 6.4 runs per game.

On Niles West's side, they got a massive performance out of Penny Hutchison, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and one stolen base. Those three runs gave Hutchison a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Ava Kolbe, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, two doubles, and one stolen base.

Looking ahead, Maine East will face off against Fenton at 4:45 p.m. on Monday. The Bison have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 9.91 runs per game on average), something the Blue Demons will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Niles West, they have already played their next contest, a 9-7 win against IC Catholic Prep on the 19th.
