Future Badger earns state's top honor after leading Muskego to 9-0 record.
Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2020 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence, in addition to local and state accolades.
Hunter Wohler of
Muskego is the 2020 MaxPreps Wisconsin High School Football Player of the Year. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound senior safety recorded 78 tackles and two interceptions in leading the Warriors to a 9-0 record in a season abbreviated by the coronavirus pandemic.
This fall, Wohler led a Muskego defense that limited opponents to seven points or less in seven games with three shutouts. The Warriors gave up just 28 points combined over the last six contests. In November, he earned the Jim Leonhard Award, which recognizes the state's top defensive back.
During Wohler's final three seasons in the program, Muskego went 37-0 with Division 1 state championships in 2018 and 2019. The Warrior defense limited opponents to single digits in 20 of those 37 wins.
Wohler will continue his football career next season at the University of Wisconsin. 247Sports regards the playmaking safety as a top 200 prospect nationally and the No. 12 safety in the senior class.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released Jan. 29.
