Volleyball Recap: Dynamic Duo of Mayela Magana and Ava Labarge Lead Las Animas to Victory

Las Animas had already won two in a row and they went ahead and made it three on Saturday. They came within a single set of losing the streak, but they secured a 2-1 W against the Swallows Charter Academy Spartans. This was a revenge game for the Trojans: when they faced off against the Spartans back in September, they had to take a 3-2 loss.

The match was a true back-and-forth as no team won consecutive sets, but in the end it was Las Animas who won the one that mattered. The match finished with set scores of 25-23, 23-25, 15-12.

Las Animas was led to victory by Ava LaBarge and Mayela Magana. LaBarge had 19 digs and four aces, while Magana had 11 digs and three aces. That's the most digs Magana has posted since back in October.

They weren't the only good servers: Las Animas was lethal from the service line and finished the match with 13 aces. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now served at least ten aces in three consecutive contests.

Swallows Charter Academy's defeat shouldn't obscure the performances of Riley James, who had 21 digs and four aces, and Emma Storm, who had 11 digs and one block. James has been hot recently, having posted 12 or more digs the last three times she's played.

Las Animas' win bumped their record up to 9-12. As for Swallows Charter Academy, their loss dropped their record down to 15-7.

Las Animas has already played their next matchup, a 2-0 defeat against Custer County on the 1st. As for Swallows Charter Academy, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next match, a 2-0 victory against Kim/Branson on the 1st.
