League recap: Berwick extends winning streak with victory over Hazleton

Wyoming Valley 1 recap November 5, 2013

Berwick added to the longest winning streak in Wyoming Valley 1 this week by beating Hazleton, 43-7. The victory was the 10th in a row for the Bulldogs.

The Cougars lost to Berwick 43-7 last week, the largest margin of any game. Zach Zukoski ran for 85 yards in the loss.

Kyle Gattusso was a passing and rushing force as Pittston beat Wyoming Area. Gattusso's key target this week was Rich Weinstock, who caught 2 passes for 58 yards.

Michael Baur threw for 122 yards and 3 touchdowns. He went 8-13 with 0 interceptions.

Baur put up the best numbers through the air as Wyoming Valley West topped Williamsport. Baur's favorite target this week was Michael Sands, who caught 5 passes for 67 yards.

The Spartans' Baur and Sands led the league in both passing and receiving yards. Baur has thrown for 1,470 yards this season, while Sands has 44 catches for 752 yards. Crestwood's Frank Aigeldinger leads the league in rushing yards with 1,336.

The Comets are currently in third, while George Curry's team is in first.

The top two defenses in the league will face off this season when Crestwood takes on the Bulldogs. Greg Myers' team has allowed 130 points this season, while Berwick has given up 73. The Comets allowed 21 points last week as they bested James M. Coughlin.

The Bulldogs led the league in scoring this week by notching 43 points on Jim Drumheller's team.
