Softball Recap: Holy Cross Wins Going Away Against Holmes

Holy Cross had to skate by with only a two-run margin when they last took the field, which might have inspired the eight-run drubbing they dealt Holmes on Thursday. The Indians put the hurt on the Bulldogs with a sharp 24-16 victory. The Indians not only won on Thursday, but they posted their biggest win since April 28th (when they won 24-7).

Evie Thomas was a major factor no matter where she played. She didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out 14 over five innings pitched. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in four consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April.

In other batting news, Paige Lachmann was a standout: she went 3-for-4 with four runs, one stolen base, and two RBI. Those four runs gave her a new career-high. Zakyah Ryan also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.

Holy Cross kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 23 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.5 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 contests they've averaged 11.

Holy Cross has been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-9-1 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 7.7 runs over those games. As for Holmes, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 6-12.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Holy Cross will face off against Scott at 5:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Holmes, they will challenge Notre Dame Academy at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday. The Pandas' pitching crew has only allowed 3.6 runs per game this season, so the Bulldogs' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
