Softball Game Preview: Colby Eagles vs. Hugoton Eagles

Colby is 8-2 against Hugoton since April of 2016 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Tuesday. Colby will look to defend their home field against Hugoton at 4:00 p.m. The timing is sure in Colby's favor as the team sits on six straight wins at home while Hugoton has been banged up by six consecutive losses on the road dating back to last season.

The home team had won the previous four meetings between Colby and Scott, and Colby kept the tradition alive. The Eagles had just enough and edged out the Beavers 6-5 on Tuesday.

Ryler Carter made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out 13 batters over seven innings while giving up three earned (and two unearned) runs off six hits. With that strong performance, she is now averaging an impressive 5.4 strikeouts per game. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 2-for-2 with one home run, three runs, and one double. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April of 2024.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sadie Cheney, who went a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI, two doubles, and one triple. Another player making a difference was Jalyssa Sabatka, who went 1-for-3 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Meanwhile, Hugoton hadn't done well against Goodland recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way last Tuesday. The Eagles had just enough and edged out the Cowboys 10-8. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Eagles have posted since April 25, 2024.

Colby is on a roll lately: they've won eight of their last ten matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-4 record this season. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 9.1 runs over those games. Hugoton's first victory this season bumped their record up to 1-3.

Colby was able to grind out a solid win over Hugoton when the teams last played back in April of 2024, winning 17-13. Will Colby repeat their success, or does Hugoton has a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
