Basketball Recap: Bruton's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Friday

After a string of eight wins, Bruton's good fortune finally ran out on Friday. They took a 61-53 hit to the loss column at the hands of the New Kent Trojans. While losing is never fun, the Panthers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Virginia basketball rankings (they are ranked 107th, while the Trojans are ranked 25th).

When it comes to explaining why Bruton lost, don't look at Brandon Freeman. Despite the final result, he almost dropped a double-double on 21 points and nine boards. Freeman's evening made it four games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Darius Prigmore, who posted ten points.

New Kent got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was Marty Wray out in front who went 9 for 14 en route to 22 points. With that strong performance, Wray is now averaging an impressive 15.2 points per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Kyle Diggs, who had 12 points in addition to seven rebounds and six assists.

Bruton's loss ended a three-game streak of away wins and brought them to 11-5. As for New Kent, they pushed their record up to 17-0 with the victory, which was their tenth straight at home.

Both squads are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. A feisty cat fight is on tap when the Bruton Panthers duke it out with the Tabb Tigers at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. As for New Kent, they will take on Lafayette at 7:00 p.m. on Monday. New Kent knows how to get points on the board -- the team has finished with 55 points or more in their past 17 matches -- so hopefully Lafayette likes a good challenge.
