Softball Recap: Archbishop McCarthy Comes Up Short

Archbishop McCarthy had lost five straight on the road, but on Wednesday they dropped down to 8-9 to make it six. They lost 11-1 to the Cardinal Gibbons Chiefs. Having soared to a lofty ten runs in the game before, the Mavericks couldn't push the score so high this time.

Archbishop McCarthy saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Alexis Nightingale, who went 1-for-3 with one run.

As for Cardinal Gibbons, the victory (which was their 12th in a row) raised their record to 17-1. Those wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.8 runs over those games.

On Cardinal Gibbons' side, Lydia Berent was a major factor no matter where she played. She pitched five innings while giving up just one earned run off four hits. Berent has been consistent for a while: she hasn't given up more than one earned run in 11 consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, four runs, and two stolen bases. That's the most stolen bases she has posted since back in April of 2025.

In other batting news, Reese Randall and Kennadi Wilson did most of the damage at the plate: Randall got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three stolen bases and two runs, while Wilson got on base in three of her four plate appearances with three runs and one stolen base. Randall is on a roll when it comes to stolen bases, as she's now snagged at least one in each of the last eight games she's played. Another player making a difference was Gia Schirripa, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run.

Archbishop McCarthy has already played their next matchup, a 6-4 victory against Stoneman Douglas on the 17th. As for Cardinal Gibbons, they also didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next contest, a 16-0 win against Monarch on the 16th.
