Softball Recap: San Diego Cavers vs. Hilltop Lancers
San Diego had lost three straight on the road, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 8-16 to make it four. They lost 7-1 to the Hilltop Lancers. The Cavers were not able to make up for their defeat to the Lancers from their previous meeting back in March of 2022.
KeyonaMae Simmons made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and went 3-for-4 with one triple, one stolen base, and one run. That triple marked the first that she has hit this season.
As for Hilltop, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matches. That's provided a massive bump to their 12-11-1 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.7 runs over those games.
On Hilltop's side, Catherine Vasquez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered only one earned run on six hits.
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Kaylani Sablan, who went 1-for-2 with three RBI and one triple. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April. The team also got some help courtesy of Olivia Mertz, who went 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI.
