Softball Recap: Merrillville Takes a Loss

If Merrillville was feeling good fresh off their 26-16 takedown of River Forest last Thursday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Pirates lost 23-8 to the Michigan City Wolves on Tuesday. The Pirates were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Wolves earlier this season, when they won 17-14.

Elani Alvarez was cooking despite her team's loss, going 3-for-4 with two runs, two doubles, and one triple. She is on a roll when it comes to hits, as she's now got three or more in each of the last three games she's played. Another player making a difference was Adrianna McDonald, who went 1-for-2 with two RBI and one run.

Merrillville has traveled a rocky road recently, having lost 11 of their last 12 matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-20 record this season. As for Michigan City, their win ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 2-15.

Merrillville and Michigan City could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Indiana Rankings. The Pirates will face off against Lake Central at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday with a big rank disadvantage (287 vs. 6). Meanwhile, Michigan City (ranked 301st) will meet Crown Point (ranked eighth) at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday. The timing isn't great for the Wolves: they have been struggling with eight straight losses at home dating back to last season, while the Bulldogs have snatched up six consecutive wins on the road.
