Football Game Preview: Hondo Owls vs. Lytle Pirates

Hondo is a perfect 5-0 against Lytle since September of 2018 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Friday. The Owls will welcome the Pirates at 7:00 p.m. Hondo is strutting in with some offensive muscle as they've averaged 40.8 points per game this season.

On Friday, Hondo blew past Cole, posting a 49-21 win. The matchup was pretty much decided by the half, when the score had already reached 35-7.

Hondo can attribute much of their success to Kolten Alvarez, who threw for 122 yards and three touchdowns, and Andrew Tapia, who rushed for 136 yards and a pair of scores on only 13 carries. Those 136 rushing yards gave Tapia a new career-high.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Hondo was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 401 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 290 rushing yards in three consecutive games.

Meanwhile, Friday just wasn't the day for Lytle's offense. They fell 13-0 to Poteet on Friday. Surprisingly, this marked the Pirates' fifth straight game in which the away team has come away the victor.

Lytle's loss dropped their record down to 3-3. As for Hondo, their victory bumped their record up to 5-1.

Hondo beat Lytle 28-20 when the teams last played back in October of 2024. Will the Owls repeat their success, or do the Pirates have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
