Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Mountainside). They put the hurt on the South Salem Saxons with a sharp 18-2 win on Tuesday. The victory was nothing new for the Mavericks as they're now sitting on five straight.
Jojo Appling and Alix Penning made a splash no matter where they played. On the mound, Appling pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Meanwhile, Penning tossed three innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. The dominant performance also gave her a new career-high in strikeouts (three). At the plate, Appling got on base in all four of her plate appearances with one home run and three RBI, while Penning got on base in all five of her plate appearances with two RBI and one run.
In other batting news, Mountainside got a big performance out of Ainsley Arbow, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with two runs and one stolen base. Another player making a difference was Aubri Kruhm, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with two RBI, one run, and one double.
Mountainside was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .385. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as South Salem only posted a batting average of .238.
Mountainside's win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 16-10. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.8 runs on average over those games. As for South Salem, they are on an eight-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-22.
Mountainside does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for South Salem, they will face off against Mountain View at 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
