The Illinois Valley Central Grey Ghosts are taking a road trip to take on the Peoria Notre Dame Irish at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Illinois Valley Central is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 9.2 runs per game this season.
On Saturday, Illinois Valley Central didn't have quite enough to beat Monticello and fell 6-5.
Caitlyn Gillette made the most of her time at bat despite the final result and scored two runs while going 3-for-4. Nora Connett was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one double.
Meanwhile, Peoria Notre Dame waltzed into their game on Tuesday with two straight wins... but they left with three. They came out on top against the Vikings by a score of 9-5. While the Irish didn't have the best season last year (they finished 8-21), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.
Elizabeth Leustek was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she tossed four innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-4.
In other batting news, Gianna Cowan was a standout: she went 1-for-4 with one home run. That home run was her first of the season. Another player making a difference was Gracie Anderson, who scored two runs while going 3-for-4.
Peoria Notre Dame kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least eight hits in seven consecutive contests.
Peoria Notre Dame's record is now 6-4. As for Illinois Valley Central, their defeat ended a six-game streak of away wins and brought them to 8-5.
Monday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Illinois Valley Central hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .365. However, it's not like Peoria Notre Dame struggles in that department as they've averaged .321. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Illinois Valley Central was able to grind out a solid victory over Peoria Notre Dame in their previous matchup back in April of 2024, winning 7-3. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Grey Ghosts since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
