Softball Recap: Hiawatha Triumphs

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Jefferson West, Hiawatha was happy to have turned things around on Thursday. They had just enough and edged out the Riley County Falcons 10-9. With that win, the Red Hawks brought their scoring average up to 6.2 runs per game.

Adison Williams made a splash while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out six batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned (and seven unearned) runs off 11 hits (and only one walk). She has been consistent recently: she hasn't given up more than one walk in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three doubles, two runs, and one stolen base. Those three doubles gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Claire Twombly, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, one triple, and one double. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April of 2024. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaeleigh Ruckman, who went 1-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.

Hiawatha kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 13 hits. The team's really been improving in that area: they've now improved their hit total in four consecutive matches.

Hiawatha's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 3-2.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: the Red Hawks beat Riley County by a score of 7-5 later that day.
