The Columbus North Bull Dogs will challenge the Greenwood Woodmen at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Columbus North is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.3 runs per game this season.
On Wednesday, Columbus North beat Southport 4-1. The victory continues a trend for the Bull Dogs in their matchups with the Cardinals: they've now won six in a row.
Bailee Scruggs was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run while striking out nine over seven innings pitched. Scruggs was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.
In other batting news, Columbus North let Morgan Jarvis and Payton Morris run wild. Jarvis went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base, while Morris went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base. That triple was Morris' first of the season.
Meanwhile, Greenwood came up short against Mooresville on Wednesday, falling 13-2. That's two games in a row now that the Woodmen have lost by exactly 11 runs.
Greenwood saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Bella Blythe, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with one run, one double, and one RBI.
Greenwood's loss was their fourth straight on the road, which dropped their record down to 5-14. As for Columbus North, the win got them back to even at 7-7.
Greenwood's hitters will have their work cut out for them on Thursday. Columbus North has been retiring batters left and right this season, having averaged 7.6 strikeouts per game. It's a different story for Greenwood, though, as they've been averaging only 3.9 strikeouts. Will Columbus North keep running through batters, or will the Woodmen buck the trend?
Everything went Columbus North's way against Greenwood in their previous meeting back in May of 2023, as Columbus North made off with an 11-0 victory. Will the Bull Dogs repeat their success, or do the Woodmen have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
