Softball Recap: Mt. Vernon Wins High-Profile Contest Against Purdy

Mt. Vernon faced Purdy in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. Mt. Vernon was the clear victor by a 12-2 margin over Purdy. The Mountaineers might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won five games by nine runs or more this season.

Emily Schubert was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out eight batters over seven innings while giving up just two earned runs off eight hits (and not a single walk). Furthermore, she didn't allow a single walk, the first time she has blanked an opponent since back in March of 2024. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBI. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in April of 2024.

In other batting news, Mt. Vernon got a massive performance out of Rae Downing, who got on base in three of her five plate appearances with one home run and three runs. That's the most runs Downing has posted since back in April of 2024. Another player making a difference was Cheyenne Bieber, who scored two runs while going 2-for-5.

Mt. Vernon's victory bumped their record up to 8-2. As for Purdy, they are on a three-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 3-5.

Coming up, Mt. Vernon will host Ash Grove at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. Mt. Vernon is facing Ash Grove at the right time seeing as Ash Grove is stuck on a three-game losing streak. As for Purdy, they are taking a road trip to take on Billings at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
