Brady Flynn made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out 12 batters over six innings while giving up just two earned runs off five hits (and only one walk). He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs, four RBI, and one stolen base. Those three runs gave him a new career-high.
In other batting news, Troy Rosenbloom was incredible, getting on base in four of his five plate appearances with three stolen bases, four runs, and one double. Those four runs gave him a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Kamdyn Wheeler, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI and one run.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Wellsboro). They were the clear victors by an 18-3 margin over Coudersport on Saturday. The Hornets have beaten the Falcons the last four times they've met, but they better watch out: this was the closest the Falcons has come to flipping the script.
Like Athens, Wellsboro also got a great game from a two-way player: Gabe Sprouse. On the mound, he pitched three innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off three hits. Sprouse also tossed two walks, which is notable because Wellsboro is 3-1 when he allows at most two walks, but 2-6 otherwise. Sprouse was also big at the plate, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.
In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Marek Mascho, who went 2-for-3 with one home run, three runs, and three RBI. Wellsboro is undefeated when Mascho posts three or more RBI, but 2-7 otherwise. Alec Magli was another key player, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI and two runs.
Wellsboro always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .793. They are a perfect 4-0 when they post an OBP of .513 or better.
Wellsboro's victory bumped their record up to 5-7. As for Athens, their win bumped their record up to 10-2.
Everything went Athens' way against Wellsboro in their previous matchup back in March, as Athens made off with a 16-10 victory. Will the Wildcats repeat their success, or do the Hornets have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
