Basketball Recap: Lytle Triumphs

It may have taken double overtime to finish the job, but Lytle ultimately got the result they hoped for on Tuesday. They secured a 69-64 W over the Cotulla Cowboys. The victory almost wasn't to be: the Pirates were down 33-19 in the third quarter.

Aliana Cardenas went supernova, dropping a double-double with 27 points and ten rebounds. She is becoming a predictor of Lytle's success: when she posts at least 15 points the team is 3-1 (and 5-18 when she doesn't). Loundyn Perez was another key player, putting up 13 points and seven steals.

Lytle smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in six consecutive games.

Lytle's win bumped their record up to 8-19. As for Cotulla, their loss dropped their record down to 12-11.

Lytle and Cotulla could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings. The Pirates (ranked 1306th) will meet Hondo (ranked 495th) at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Cotulla will take on Jourdanton at 6:00 p.m. on Friday with a big rank disadvantage (1028 vs. 342).
