Baseball Game Preview: Dyer County Choctaws vs. St. George's Gryphons

The Dyer County Choctaws will challenge the St. George's Gryphons at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday. Dyer County is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 7.3 runs per game this season.

On Tuesday, Dyer County needed a bit of extra time to put away Covington. They skirted past the Chargers 5-3. The Choctaws haven't had any issues with the Chargers recently, as the game was their third consecutive win against them.

Talon Messer made a splash no matter where he played. He struck out seven batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off five hits. The dominant performance gave him a new career-high in strikeouts. He was also solid in the batter's box, scoring a run while going 1-for-4.

In other pitching news, Easton Ozment looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. What's more, he posted four strikeouts, the most he's had since back in March of 2024.

Back at the plate, the team relied heavily on Koleman Pride, who scored a run while getting on base in all five of his plate appearances. Another player making a difference was Everett Kuykendall, who scored a run and stole a base while going 2-for-4.

Meanwhile, St. George's fought the good fight in their extra-innings matchup against South Gibson on Wednesday but wound up with a less-than-desirable result. They fell just short of the Hornets by a score of 8-7.

St. George's defeat dropped their record down to 3-3. As for Dyer County, the victory got them back to even at 4-4-1.

Dyer County was able to grind out a solid win over St. George's when the teams last played back in March of 2019, winning 7-2. Does Dyer County have another victory up their sleeve, or will St. George's turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
