Basketball Recap: Winn Takes a Loss

Winn was not able to break out of their rough patch on Tuesday as the team picked up their 22nd straight defeat. They were six points away from ending the streak, but they lost a 45-39 heartbreaker at the hands of the Southside Cardinals. Sadly, that's the second time they've come up short against the Mavericks this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 71-69 back in January.

When it comes to explaining why Winn lost, don't look at Francisco Villarreal. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double on 16 points and 11 rebounds. Another player making a difference was Rodrigo Balbuena, who posted four points.

Even though they lost, Winn smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 20 offensive rebounds. That's the most offensive boards they've posted since back in December of 2023.

Winn's loss dropped their record down to 3-27. As for Southside, their win ended a 12-game drought on the road and puts them at 4-21.

Winn and Southside could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps Texas Rankings. Winn (ranked 1325th) will meet South San Antonio (ranked 176th) at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Southside will square off against Southwest Legacy at 6:30 p.m. on Friday down 648 places (1183 vs. 535).
