Baseball Recap: Greater Nanticoke Area Comes Up Short

Greater Nanticoke Area had lost seven straight on the road, but on Wednesday they dropped their record down to 3-15 to make it eight. They took a 5-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Berwick Bulldogs. The Trojans were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Bulldogs earlier this season, when they won 6-1.

As for Berwick, their victory ended an eight-game drought at home and bumped them up to 3-15. That looming 5-0 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for them yet this season.

For Berwick's part, the result came thanks to Cole Phillips's shutout, as he gave up just three hits and racked up six Ks.

On the hitting side, Berwick saw six different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Luke Sult, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base and one run. That's the most hits Sult has posted since back in April. Derek Pinterich also deserves some recognition as he scored his first run of the season.

Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Greater Nanticoke Area will venture away from home to face off against Crestwood at 4:15 p.m. on Thursday. As for Berwick, they will head out to take on Hazleton Area at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Cougars' pitching crew has only allowed 3.7 runs per game this season, so the Bulldogs' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
