Preview: Athens vs. Bullard
After 13 games on the road, Athens is heading back home. They will take on the Bullard Panthers at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.
Last Tuesday, everything went Athens' way against Van as Athens made off with a 12-1 win. Makenzie Gardner was a massive factor in the win, as she booted in three goals all by herself.
Meanwhile, Bullard entered their tilt with Cumberland Academy with 11 consecutive wins but they'll enter their next game with 12. Bullard never let Cumberland Academy onto the board and left with a 11-0 victory on Friday. Given Bullard's advantage in MaxPreps' Texas soccer rankings (they are ranked 100th, while Cumberland Academy is ranked 632nd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Athens has been performing well recently as they've won nine of their last 12 contests, which provided a nice bump to their 11-2-3 record this season. As for Bullard, their victory was their sixth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 13-1.
Athens came up short against Bullard when the teams last played back in March of 2023, falling 2-0. Can Athens avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
