Baseball Recap: Maiden Snags Seventh Win in Last Eight Games

Maiden lost a heartbreaker the last time they played Newton-Conover, but it's fair to say they got their revenge given the result of Thursday's contest. The Blue Devils blew past the Red Devils 10-4 on Thursday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Blue Devils needed considering they were shut out in their previous match.

Collin Chappel made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out nine batters over 5.1 innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off four hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't tossed less than nine strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.

In other batting news, Ethan Whittaker was incredible, getting on base in three of his four plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. Those three stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Zane Williams was another key player, going 2-for-4 with two doubles, one run, and one RBI.

Maiden has been performing incredibly well recently as they've won seven of their last eight games. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-8 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.4 runs on average over those games. As for Newton-Conover, they moved to 11-6 with that loss, which also ended their eight-game winning streak.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Maiden will welcome Hickory at 6:30 p.m. on Monday. The Blue Devils are on a seven-game streak of home wins, the Red Tornadoes a three-game streak of away wins, meaning someone's leaving a streak behind. As for Newton-Conover, they will host Foard at 4:00 p.m. on Monday. The Red Devils are facing the Tigers at the right time seeing as the Tigers are stuck on a five-game losing streak.
