Football Recap: Bartlett Takes Down Ranked West Anchorage

Bartlett faced West Anchorage in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Friday. The Golden Bears came out on top against the Eagles by a score of 20-12. This was payback for the Golden Bears, who suffered a 28-20 defeat the last time these two teams met.

A big part of Bartlett's victory came down to the chemistry between Tatum Pogtis and his top target Salvation Tyrell. Pogtis threw for 216 yards and three touchdowns on only 15 passes while Tyrell picked up 70 receiving yards and a pair of TDs. Those 70 receiving yards gave Tyrell a new career-high.

Wins are hard to come by when you can't run the rock, something Bartlett proved: they limited West Anchorage to a paltry -1.7 yards per carry. The team can thank Deuce Alailefaleula for the heroic effort on defense: he. Bartlett's ground attack was stronger, having averaged 1.3.

Bartlett's defense didn't let Baylor Wasson, get away unscathed either: they got into the backfield for five sacks. Leading the way was Alailefaleula with three. He is becoming a predictor of Bartlett's success: when he posts at least two sacks the team is undefeated (and 1-2 when he doesn't).

Despite the loss, West Anchorage had strong showings from David Sanders, who picked up 122 receiving yards and one score, and Isaiah Sosa-Carpenter, who picked up 14 receiving yards and one TD. Sanders' longest reception was for an incredible 71 yards.

Bartlett's win was their fourth straight at home dating back to last season, which pushed their record up to 4-2. As for West Anchorage, their defeat was their first of the season and makes their record 6-1.

Coming up, Bartlett will head out on the road to take on Colony at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Golden Bears will be up against the Knights' rather soft defense (which has allowed 29.33 points per matchup), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for West Anchorage, they will host Juneau-Douglas at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
