Basketball Recap: West Elk Piles Up the Points Against Caldwell

West Elk hadn't done well against Caldwell recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Friday. The West Elk Patriots claimed a resounding 60-27 win over the Caldwell Bluejays. With the Patriots ahead 42-15 at the half, the matchup was all but over already.

It was another big night for Maddex Moreno, who went 6-for-11 en route to 17 points in addition to seven assists and six rebounds. He is also on a roll when it comes to field goal percentage, as he's posted one of at least 45% in the last 11 games he's played. Another player making a difference was Garett Usry, who went 6-for-11 on his way to 16 points.

Moreno wasn't the only one working in the assist department: West Elk was working as a unit and finished the game with 18 assists. That's the most assists they've posted since back in February of 2024.

Despite the defeat, Caldwell saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Mak Blosser posted 12 points.

West Elk is on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten games, which provided a massive bump to their 10-6 record this season. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 52.6 points over those games. As for Caldwell, they are on a five-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 2-14.

West Elk wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 55-51 loss against Flinthills on the 11th. As for Caldwell, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next matchup, a 54-42 defeat against Argonia on the 11th.
