Hobbs and Lovington played the most hotly contested game in 5A District 4 this week, with Hobbs eventually emerging with a 16-14 victory.
The Eagles made the biggest jump in the national rankings this week, rising to 8,367 from 8,537. The improvement came about via a 16-14 victory over the Wildcats last week.
Carlsbad's offense was tough to stop this week, as it produced the league's top passer, rusher and receiver. Rodney Holcomb threw for 82 and one touchdown and Josh Miller had 30 yards receiving. On the ground Dillion Caddell chipped in 81 yards. Tyler Hyden helped Carlsbad's passing attack out by catching one ball for 23 yards.
The Cavemen's Holcomb and Hyden have formed a dynamic duo this season, leading the league in both passing and receiving yards. Holcomb has thrown for 1023 yards this season, while Hyden, a 6-foot-3 receiver, has 23 catches for 358 yards. Clovis's Kamal Cass leads the league in rushing yards with 932.
The Wildcats' Cass needs only 68 yards against Sandia next week to surpass 1,000 rushing yards for the season.
