Volleyball Recap: Pittsburg Pirates vs. El Cerrito Gauchos
After flying high against Berean Christian last Tuesday, Pittsburg came back down to earth. Pittsburg took a 3-1 hit to the loss column at the hands of the El Cerrito Gauchos on Thursday. The Pirates were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Gauchos apparently hadn't forgotten their loss the last time these teams played back in March of 2024.
Erick Espinosa paced Pittsburg's offense, picking up seven kills. Espinosa got some help from Angel Lozano De La Cruz and his 19 assists. Finally, Paul Rozario and Damien Takafua kept the team grounded on defense, each having blocked four attacks.
El Cerrito had a senior duo take command as Austin Lowe had seven digs and two aces and Tenzin Rakasha had 30 assists and three digs. Those 30 assists set a new season-high mark for Rakasha.
Pittsburg's defeat dropped their record down to 6-12. As for El Cerrito, they are on a roll lately: they've won six of their last seven contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-4 record this season.
Pittsburg didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next match, a 2-0 loss against Stone Ridge Christian on the 29th. As for El Cerrito, they also wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 2-1 win against Encinal on the 29th.
