Baseball Recap: Mayfield Comes Up Short

Mayfield extended their losing streak to eight on Friday, dropping them down to 5-17. They came up short against the Carlisle County Comets, falling 15-4. Unfortunately, that's the third time they've come up short against the Comets this season, with their most recent loss being a 3-0 defeat back in March.

Mayfield saw five different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Kyler Simpson, who went 1-for-2 with two stolen bases and one run. The Cardinals are 2-1 when Simpson posts two or more stolen bases, but 3-16 otherwise.

As for Carlisle County, the victory made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 9-15. They not only won on Friday, but they posted their biggest win since March 30th (when they won 12-0).

On Carlisle County's side, Cooper Wright made a splash while hitting and pitching. He struck out six batters over five innings while giving up three earned (and one unearned) runs off six hits (and only one walk). Those six strikeouts gave Wright a new career-high. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with one run.

In other batting news, Carlisle County got a massive performance out of Kase Kelly, who went 4-for-5 with three runs, three RBI, and one stolen base. Those three RBI gave Kelly a new career-high. Kasen Perez also deserves some recognition as he snagged his first stolen bases of the season.

Looking ahead, Mayfield will venture away from home to challenge St. Mary at 5:30 p.m. on Monday. The Cardinals' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Vikings have averaged an impressive 6.5 runs per game this season. As for Carlisle County, they will be playing at home against Fulton County at 5:30 p.m. on Monday.
