Baseball Recap: Waukegan Bulldogs vs. Zion-Benton Zee-Bees
Waukegan had lost nine straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Monday they dropped their record down to 1-20 to make it ten. They came up short against the Zion-Benton Zee-Bees, falling 10-0. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Zee-Bees this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 10-1 back in April.
As for Zion-Benton, their win bumped their record up to 8-20. Considering their hitters had been struggling lately, the high-scoring outing was a much-needed turnaround.
For Zion-Benton's part, they got a great performance from Andrew Mitchell as he didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only one hit while striking out ten over five innings pitched. Mitchell is becoming a predictor of the Zee-Bees' success: when he posts at least eight strikeouts the team is undefeated (and 5-20 when he doesn't).
At the plate, the team relied heavily on Michael Gonzalez, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI. Another player making a difference was Brayden Duran, who went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
Coming up, Waukegan will head out to take on Hoffman Estates at 4:30 p.m. on Monday. As for Zion-Benton, they will be playing at home against Tinley Park at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
