Basketball Game Preview: Southside Cardinals vs. Sam Houston Hurricanes

Two dominant guards in Gabryela Galvan and Jakiyah Caldwell are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Southside Cardinals will challenge the Sam Houston Hurricanes at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Both squads will be entering this one on the heels of a big victory.

Southside is headed into the matchup having just posted their biggest win since January 3rd on Tuesday. They claimed a resounding 61-31 victory over Winn. The Cardinals haven't had any issues with the Mavericks recently, as the game was their fourth consecutive win against them.

McKayla Flores continued her habit of posting crazy stat lines, going 10 for 21 to rack up 25 points along with seven boards and seven steals. What's more, she also posted a 48% shooting accuracy, which is the highest she's posted since back in November of 2024. Bethany Garcia was another key player, going 6 of 13 on her way to 15 points and six steals.

Meanwhile, Sam Houston had already won 20 in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 20.6 points) and they went ahead and made it 21 on Monday. They breezed by the Buffaloes to the tune of 64-16. Given the Hurricanes' advantage in MaxPreps' Texas basketball rankings (they are ranked 193rd, while the Buffaloes are ranked 1245th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Sam Houston's win came from a few key players Southside will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Bre'yanna Murray, who posted 13 points. Another player making a difference was Caldwell, who put up 11 points.

Sam Houston pushed their record up to 30-4 with the victory, which was their ninth straight on the road. Those victories came thanks in part to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 59.2 points over those games. As for Southside, their record is now 27-8.

Southside came up short against Sam Houston when the teams last played back in November of 2024, falling 48-37. Can Southside avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
