Softball Game Preview: Calloway County Lakers vs. Murray Tigers

Calloway County is 8-2 against Murray since April of 2021 and they'll have a chance to extend that dominance on Monday. The Lakers are taking a road trip to square off against the Tigers at 5:30 p.m. Calloway County will be strutting in after a victory while Murray will be coming in after a loss.

Calloway County is headed in fresh off scoring the most runs they have all season. Everything went their way against Mayfield on Thursday as they made off with a 13-3 win. The high-scoring effort was just what the Lakers needed considering they were shut out in their previous matchup.

Hailee Jones made a splash while hitting and pitching. She struck out 14 batters over six innings while giving up just one earned (and two unearned) runs off four hits. She has been consistent recently: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-4 with three RBI. Those three RBI gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Audrey Overbey, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with two stolen bases, three runs, and one double. Those two stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Laynee Houk, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double.

Calloway County always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .514. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Meanwhile, Murray fell victim to Trigg County and their airtight pitching crew on Thursday. They lost 19-0 to the Wildcats. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat the Tigers have suffered against the Wildcats since March 24, 2017.

Calloway County is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 3-22 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games. As for Murray, they dropped their record down to 2-14 with the loss, which was their fourth straight at home.

Calloway County took their win against Murray in their previous matchup two weeks ago by a conclusive 11-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Lakers since the team won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
