Basketball Preview: Kentridge Chargers vs. Sumner Spartans

Two dominant guards in Sydney Esperanza and Lainee Houillon are getting ready to go toe-to-toe. The Kentridge Chargers will head out on the road to challenge the Sumner Spartans at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Kentridge will have to bring their A-game into this one, as they are staring down a pretty big deficit in the MaxPreps Washington Rankings (they are ranked 85th, while the Spartans are ranked 18th).

Last Friday, Kentridge was within striking distance but couldn't close the gap as they fell 57-52 to the Conquerors. Kentridge has now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Esperanza put forth a good effort for the losing side as she almost dropped a double-double on nine points and ten rebounds. She has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last seven times she's played. Jayla Keowla was another key contributor, scoring 11 points along with seven rebounds and four steals.

Meanwhile, Sumner came tearing into Saturday's game with six straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 41.5 points) and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top against Bellarmine Prep by a score of 58-46.

Kentridge's defeat dropped their record down to 12-9. As for Sumner, their victory bumped their record up to 21-1.

Kentridge was dealt a bruising 78-32 loss at the hands of the Spartans when the teams last played back in February of 2022. Can Kentridge avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
